David Veleber- Town Council - First District 2017- present
It has been an honor and privilege to serve the residents of Cheshire’s First District as their town councilor. It is a pleasure to regularly listen to the suggestions and comments of both residents of the district and throughout the town to help keep Cheshire one of the best places to live in the U.S.
I HAVE BEEN STRONG ADVOCATE FOR:
- Protecting property values for all Cheshire residents by minimizing taxes, including supporting significant expansions of the tax exemption programs for the elderly, veterans, and the disabled to lower their tax burden. I have supported only minimal mill rate increases at less than the cost of inflation over the past six years;
- Maintaining and improving our quality education system, especially as we collaboratively work to find ways to continue to modernize our school infrastructure, including two new elementary schools to be built to replace our three oldest school buildings. I voted to increase funding for teachers and capital improvements;
- Increasing responsible economic development, which has led to steady Grand List growth. Over the past two years, the total value of taxable property in Cheshire has seen the two largest increases in Grand List growth in the past 25 years;
- Supporting public safety, including providing for the resources, personnel, and training needed to maintain our outstanding police and fire departments.
I have served as the Chair of two committees. As chair of the Council’s Ordinance Review Committee, I have been proud to facilitate new ordinances to increase the quality of life in Cheshire, including the adoption of a blight ordinance to address some of the most problematic properties and ordinances to provide for more tax relief for seniors, veterans, and the disabled. In addition, as chair of the Council’s Solid Waste Committee from 2017-2019, I helped champion the return of bulky waste pickup in 2019 (and supported the continued implementation of that program).
About Me
I have lived in Cheshire for 45 years. My wife and I are raising our four daughters here. I want Cheshire to continue to be a wonderful place to raise a family, as well as a place where seniors can continue to live and businesses desire to operate. We need to continue to make smart choices about spending to protect property values and help keep Cheshire attractive to residents and businesses while maintaining important services for youth, parents, and seniors. We also need to continue to modernize our schools in a fiscally prudent and responsible manner and continue our very successful plan to attract more quality economic development to town.
